When the day—or week—feels like a total shit storm, these books bring me the solace and solitude I need to take on another one.

Not convinced a book can change your mood? Trust me—they can.

Books are a distraction in the best possible way. They pull you out of your worries and stresses and drop you into a universe entirely separate from your own.

And when you return, those negative feelings don’t hit quite as hard.

A book can offer a new perspective, a fresh focus, or simply a break from your own thoughts.

They prove that difficult things can be handled—and survived.

Here are some of my most treasured pick-me-up reads...

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Yessss, this book is for children.

But there’s something about Dr. Seuss’s bouncy rhymes and amusing illustrations that melts my heart every time.

It’s impossible to read it without smiling.

Sometimes, all you need to get through the afternoon is some ridiculousness!

Milk and Honey

by Rupi Kaur

This beautiful book of poetry reminds me that I am not alone in my struggles.

It speaks to resilience, healing, and the quiet strength of women.

Milk and Honey does an excellent job of inspiring hope—and encouraging positive change in your own life.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse / Always Remember

by Charlie Mackesy

These books feature the most beautiful, moody watercolour illustrations.

The first time I read The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, I cried—and then cried some more (no judgement here).

The struggles the Boy faces are small, yet deeply impactful to him.

With the help of his friends, he learns that he can take on the world!

It’s an escape into colour and comfort, perfectly paired with simple but powerful words. Always the perfect gift for someone you love.

The Book of Hygge

by Meik Wiking

This book quite literally teaches you how to be calm and relaxed the Danish way—some of the happiest people on the planet. (They must be doing something right).

It’s a go-to guide for coziness and calm, covering everything from candles and lighting to socializing and slowing down.

The perfect book for building healthy habits that support your mental health and happiness.

Only six minutes of reading can lower stress levels by up to 68% and slow your heart rate.

So get your read on, folks—it’s for your health.
And your sanity. For some of us.

Until next time,
Sheila
